Midnight Coffee & La Croix
Early attempts at package & 3D design.
When I was in high school, I was very determined to understand package design. Two of my projects involved creating a fake drink brand and redesigning a current brand. Like most, I was drinking a lot of coffee and La Croix. And so my first effort at package design began.
Starting with La Croix, I chose to do two flavors that had interesting fruits, specifically from their Cúrate series. I chose Melón Pomelo and Muré Pepino.
I then outlined and colored all the involved fruits in the drinks. For backgrounds, I decided to go with a pattern that was related to the flavors. So Melón Pomelo got a skin like a cantaloupe, and Muré Pepino got the waves and lines of a cucumber.
As far as deciding fonts go, I wanted to keep it very simple and futuristic, to really emphasize the art deco aspect of the cans.
After getting a flat design, I 3D modeled them in Illustrator. This was before Adobe Dimension was created. 3D modeling in Illustrator involved creating half of an outline of whatever object you want to make. Luckily, a can is a round object that rotates around a 360 degree axis. So, I created an outline of half a can, rotated the line, expanded the shape, made the label into a symbol, and mapped the symbol to the rotated shape.
With this knowledge, I went into packaging for a mock coffee brand called Midnight Coffee.
Midnight Coffee is a coffee with a personality, similar to the text on a Vitamin Water bottle or the fun fact on the inside of a Snapple bottle.
After constructing these flavors, I moved into Adobe Dimension for the first time. I remade some of the labels for bottles and bags of coffee.
This project helped familiarize me with basic package design and how Adobe Dimension works.
Another package design mock project I did was in 2019, for fake root beer brand “The Root.” The root is based on.....
